Therapeutic ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound promotes joint mobility and tendon extensibility. It also helps to soften of scar tissue, lessen calcium deposits, draw out abscess and reduce edema. The therapeutic ultrasound machine converts electrical current into high frequency acoustic energy waves. Ultrasound waves can travel one to five centimeters into the body’s soft tissues; skin, muscle, tendons and ligaments. These waves act as a deep heating agent and penetrate much further into the tissues than superficial heat in order to target a clearly defined area. In addition to the body’s reaction to heat, acoustic energy also has non-thermal effects. Micro-vibrations of cells can cause a change in cell permeability, diffusion rates, and stimulation of micro-receptors leading to decreased inflammation and healing time along with a more comfortable recovery from both chronic and acute injuries.
